Which E-Commerce Platform Is Best for Small Indian Shops?

Which E-Commerce Platform Is Best for Small Indian Shops?

A shop owner once asked me a very simple question:

“Abhinav, I already have a physical shop. Why should I become an online seller and start packing and shipping orders across India?”

It was a good question.

A local shop may already have customers living within 2, 5 or 10 km. The shop has stock. It has staff. It has a physical location where people can see, touch and buy products.

The real problem may not be delivery.

The problem is that nearby buyers don't know what is available inside that shop.

So when someone asks me, “Which e-commerce platform is best for small Indian shops?”, my answer depends on what that shop actually wants.

Do you want to become a full online seller?

Or do you want people to check your shop online and then come and buy offline?

These are two very different things.

I am Abhinav Jain, Founder of Vizbe, and this difference is one of the main reasons we are building Vizbe.

Amazon: Good If You Want to Sell and Deliver Online

Amazon India Seller is built for online selling.

You list a product. A customer orders it. The product gets packed and delivered to the customer.

Amazon gives sellers access to a very large online customer base. Amazon says more than 14 lakh businesses sell through Amazon.in.

But there is another side.

Selling on Amazon can involve referral fees, closing fees, shipping or weight-handling charges and, depending on how you fulfil orders, other fees. The exact amount changes based on product category, price, size, weight and fulfilment method.

For a business that wants orders from across India, this can make sense.

But think about a local clothing shop in Jaipur.

What if the owner doesn't want to ship a ₹700 shirt 1,000 km away?

What if he simply wants a customer living 2 km away to discover the shirt online and visit his shop?

That requires a different model.

Shopify: Good If You Want Your Own Online Store

Shopify India takes another approach.

Instead of selling mainly through somebody else's marketplace, you can build your own ecommerce store.

You get your own storefront, product catalogue, checkout, inventory tools and other ecommerce features. Shopify says coding isn't required to get started.

But it isn't completely free.

As of August 2026, Shopify India's Basic plan is listed at ₹1,499 per month when billed yearly, while higher plans cost more. Third-party payment-provider fees can also apply depending on the plan and payment setup.

For a brand that wants its own full ecommerce website, Shopify can be a good choice.

But again, ask:

Does your local shop need a full ecommerce website?

A small footwear shop in Lucknow may simply want nearby buyers to know that new shoes have arrived.

That shop may not need checkout pages, nationwide shipping and a complete ecommerce operation.

It may need local online visibility.

ONDC: Another Option for Indian Sellers

India also has ONDC, or Open Network for Digital Commerce.

ONDC is not itself one shopping app. It is an open network that allows sellers and buyer applications to connect through the network.

Sellers generally connect through participating seller applications, which can help digitise their catalogues and make their products discoverable through buyer applications.

This gives Indian businesses another route into digital commerce.

But there is still an important difference between selling online and using online discovery to grow your physical shop.

And that brings me to Vizbe.

Vizbe: Check Online. Buy Offline.

Vizbe is being built around a very simple idea:

Check Online. Buy Offline.

We don't think every local retailer needs to turn into a warehouse, packing centre and delivery company.

Your physical shop itself has value.

Customers can visit.

They can check the product.

They can speak with you.

They can buy immediately.

So why not use online technology to bring more people into that existing shop?

That's the idea behind Vizbe.

Vizbe for Sellers App – For Local Shops & Businesses

With the Vizbe for Sellers App, local shops can create their presence and put their products online.

You can add products that you already sell in your physical store.

A nearby customer can discover them online and then visit you to buy.

You can also add deals and cashback offers.

Think about a cosmetics shop in Delhi.

The owner gets new stock.

Instead of waiting for someone to walk past the shop and notice it, the seller can add products on Vizbe so buyers can check them online.

The shop becomes visible beyond its front door.

That's the big change.

Add Products

Show buyers what you sell.

Create Deals

Give nearby buyers another reason to visit.

Offer Cashback

Give existing customers a reason to come back again.

Connect With Buyers

Once buyers connect with your business, you have a way to stay connected with them on Vizbe.

This is not about replacing your physical shop.

It is about making your physical shop easier to discover online.

Vizbe for Shopping App – For Buyers

The other half is the Vizbe for Shopping App.

A buyer doesn't always want delivery.

Sometimes they want to know:

“Where can I get this near me?”

Imagine somebody in Rohini looking for a particular product.

Or somebody in Noida checking which nearby shop has a good deal.

Or a customer in Pune wanting to see what offers are running before going shopping.

Vizbe is designed to help buyers discover nearby shops, products, deals and cashback before visiting.

That creates a simple journey:

Check Online → Find a Local Shop → Visit → Buy Offline

Which Platform Should a Small Indian Shop Choose?

There isn't one platform that is automatically best for every shop.

The better question is what kind of business you want to run.

If you want customers across India to place orders online and have products delivered to them, marketplaces such as Amazon can make sense.

If you want to build and control your own full ecommerce website, Shopify is one option.

If you want to participate in India's open digital-commerce network, you can explore ONDC through its participating seller applications.

But if your main business is your physical shop, I think you should also ask:

Why should my online presence only be about delivery?

Maybe your online presence should help your offline store get more customers.

That's where Vizbe fits.

Don't Try to Become Amazon. Make Your Local Shop Easier to Find.

I think this is where many small retailers get confused.

They see big ecommerce companies and think they have to copy them.

You don't.

A local retailer already has something online marketplaces don't have:

A real shop close to the customer.

Use that advantage.

Let someone sitting at home see your products.

Let them check your deals.

Let them discover your cashback offer.

Let them connect with your business.

Then give them a reason to walk into your shop and buy.

That is what we mean when we say:

Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.

If you run a local shop, you can start with the Vizbe for Sellers App on Google Play and begin putting your store and products online.

You don't necessarily need to change your entire business model.

You don't need to stop being a local retailer.

You simply need to make your local shop easier for online buyers to discover.
