How Do I Create an Instagram Business Account for My Shop?

If you run a local shop and want to put your business on Instagram, creating a business account is a good place to start.
It is free to create, and you don't need a website or technical knowledge.
But I want to make one thing clear from the beginning:
Creating an Instagram business account is easy. Getting people to discover your account, follow it and finally visit your physical shop takes much more work.
I am Abhinav Jain, one of the founders of Vizbe.com. When I speak with local retailers, I often see shop owners who already have an Instagram account.
Then I ask:
“Do customers actually come to your shop after seeing your Instagram?”
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Many times, the shopkeeper isn't sure.
So let's first create your Instagram business presence properly. Then I'll explain how you can connect social media with a platform made around local shopping.
What Is an Instagram Business Account?
Instagram offers professional accounts for people and businesses that want more tools than a normal personal account.
For a local retailer, a Business account generally makes more sense than a Creator account.
It lets your shop build a professional presence where you can post photos, Stories, videos and Reels.
You can show your products, new arrivals and what is happening inside your store.
A saree shop in Surat can show its latest collection.
A footwear shop in Lucknow can post new shoes.
A home décor store in Jaipur can make short videos showing new products.
The basic idea is simple: let people see your shop before they physically visit it.
Step 1: Create an Instagram Account
Start by opening Instagram and creating an account for your business.
I suggest keeping your business account separate from your personal Instagram account.
Choose a username that is as close as possible to your actual shop name.
For example, if your business is called:
Modern Footwear
a username such as:
@modernfootwear
or
@modernfootwearpune
is much clearer than something like:
@modern786shoes2026
Keep it simple. Customers should be able to remember it.
Step 2: Switch to a Professional Account
Once your Instagram account is ready, go to your profile and open the account settings.
Look for the option related to account type or professional account and choose the option to switch to a professional account.
Instagram may change the exact location or wording of these settings over time, so don't worry if your screen looks slightly different.
Select the category that best describes your shop.
Then choose Business rather than Creator if you're setting up an account for a normal local retail business.
Instagram and Facebook are both operated by Meta, and Meta provides business tools across both platforms.
Step 3: Complete Your Shop Profile
Don't leave your profile half empty.
Your customer should quickly understand:
Who are you?
What do you sell?
Where are you located?
Use your shop logo or another clear business image as your profile photo.
Write a short bio.
For example:
Women's Clothing & Accessories
Latest Kurtis, Suits & Sarees
Rohini, Delhi
Visit Our Store
Your exact address and other available business details can be added where appropriate.
A customer shouldn't have to search through 20 posts just to understand what your business sells.
Step 4: Start Posting Your Products
Now comes the part that actually matters.
Don't create an Instagram account and leave it empty.
Start showing products.
If you run a cosmetics store in Mumbai, don't only post a photo saying:
“Welcome to our Instagram page.”
Show customers what they can buy.
Post your new arrivals.
Show products being used.
Show different options.
Show what's new this week.
Instagram supports business promotion through formats including posts, Stories, videos and Reels.
Your account should give someone a reason to visit your shop.
Reels Can Help People Discover Your Shop
Reels have become a major part of Instagram.
For a local retailer, short videos can work particularly well because customers can see several products quickly.
Suppose you have a clothing store in Bengaluru.
Instead of photographing one shirt, you could make a short video:
“5 new shirts available at our store this week.”
Show each shirt.
Mention your area.
Tell people they can visit your shop.
Done.
You don't need every Reel to look like a professional television advertisement.
A clear video showing a useful product can be enough.
The Difficult Part Starts After Creating Your Account
This is where my view about social media for local retailers is a little different.
Creating the account isn't the hard part.
Keeping it active is.
You need photos.
Videos.
Captions.
Stories.
Reels.
Comments.
Replies.
And after doing all that, you still need Instagram's system to show your content to enough relevant people.
A shopkeeper already has enough work.
Customers are standing at the counter.
Stock is arriving.
Suppliers are calling.
Staff needs help.
Payments need checking.
Now someone says:
“Sir, today's Reel bhi banana hai.”
It can become another job.
Followers Are Not the Same as Local Buyers
This matters even more.
Imagine your shop is in Ahmedabad.
One of your Reels gets 10,000 views.
Sounds great.
But where are those viewers?
If most of them live hundreds of kilometres away, those views may not help your physical shop much.
A local retailer doesn't simply need more people.
You need relevant people who can actually visit your shop.
That is a very different goal.
Social Media Users Are Not Always Shopping
Think about why someone opens Instagram.
Maybe they want to watch a funny Reel.
Maybe they want to see what friends posted.
Maybe they follow a cricket player or creator.
Your product appears between all this content.
You are competing for attention.
This doesn't make Instagram bad.
I think Instagram can be very useful for local shops.
But your business needs more than attention.
You eventually need someone to walk through your shop door and purchase.
This Is Where Vizbe Takes a Different Approach
At Vizbe, we built the idea around shopping rather than social entertainment.
A shopkeeper shouldn't need to become a content creator just to show customers what is available in the store.
Add your products.
Add your deals.
Create cashback offers.
Let shoppers check them online.
Then bring those interested shoppers to your physical store.
That's why our positioning is:
Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.
Vizbe for Sellers App – For Local Shops & Business
The Vizbe for Sellers App is made specifically around the needs of local businesses.
You can create your store presence and start adding the things customers actually want to know about.
Your products.
Your deals.
Your cashback.
Your offers.
Customers can connect with your shop, and Vizbe also gives businesses communication tools such as chat and bulk messaging.
The goal is not followers.
The goal is:
Get New Customers. Retain Existing Customers. Increase Sales.
Put Your Products Online
Suppose you own a footwear shop in Hyderabad.
You receive 20 new shoe designs.
On social media, you might make posts or Reels and wait for people to discover them.
On Vizbe, those products can become part of your shop's online product presence.
A shopper can check products online and then visit your physical store to purchase.
No need to turn your local shop into a packing and delivery business.
Check Online. Buy Offline.
Use Deals to Bring People to Your Shop
A deal should do more than get likes.
It should help generate business.
You can create deals through Vizbe for shoppers to discover.
A customer checks the deal online.
Likes it.
Visits the shop.
Buys offline.
That's the online-to-offline journey we're trying to build.
Use Cashback to Bring Existing Customers Back
Getting someone into your store once is good.
Getting them to return is even better.
Vizbe gives shops cashback tools that can give customers another reason to shop with you again.
For me, this is one of the areas where local retailers should spend more attention.
Don't only chase new followers.
Take care of the customers who already buy from you.
Chat and Bulk Messages With Connected Buyers
Vizbe also helps shops stay connected with buyers.
Customers can chat with businesses, while sellers can communicate useful updates to connected buyers.
If you've received a new collection or started a deal, you have another way to tell interested customers about it.
Your business relationship doesn't have to depend entirely on whether Instagram shows your next post in someone's feed.
Vizbe for Shopping App – For Buyers
The Vizbe for Shopping App completes the other side.
It's built around people who want to explore local shopping.
Buyers can discover local stores and check products, deals and cashback offers online.
Then they can visit the store and buy.
A person looking for shoes shouldn't only see large online marketplaces.
Why shouldn't they also discover the shoe shop sitting two kilometres away?
That's the behaviour we want Vizbe – Check Online, Buy Offline to encourage.
Should I Use Instagram or Vizbe?
I would use both.
Instagram can help your shop create awareness and show personality.
Use it for photos, Stories and Reels if those formats work for your business.
Vizbe has a different job.
Use Vizbe to create a shopping-focused presence around your store, products, deals, cashback and customer connections.
Instagram can help someone notice your business.
Vizbe can help them explore what you're selling and connect that online discovery with an offline shop visit.
And your physical store does what it has always done best:
Complete the sale face-to-face.
