How Can I Get Customers to Contact Me on WhatsApp?

Getting customers to contact your shop on WhatsApp sounds simple.
Put your WhatsApp number everywhere and wait for messages.
But that doesn't always work.
A customer needs a reason to message you.
Maybe they want to check if a product is available. Maybe they want the price. Maybe they saw an offer. Or they want to know if your shop is open.
I am Abhinav Jain, one of the founders of Vizbe.com, a Noida-based platform built for local shops and shoppers.
While working around local retail, one thing has become very clear to me: shop owners don't really need more phone numbers in their contact list. They need more real conversations that can turn into shop visits and sales.
So let's see how WhatsApp can help with that.
1. Use WhatsApp Business, Not Just Your Personal WhatsApp
If WhatsApp is being used for your shop, start with WhatsApp Business.
It is made for businesses and gives you tools that normal WhatsApp doesn't.
You can add your business name, category, description, opening hours and other shop information.
You can also create a product catalog and use business messaging tools.
This makes your WhatsApp account feel like it belongs to your shop rather than someone's personal mobile number.
2. Create a WhatsApp Link for Your Shop
One of the easiest ways to get more WhatsApp enquiries is to remove the need for customers to manually save your number.
WhatsApp's click-to-chat feature lets people start a conversation using a link without first saving the phone number.
You can place this link on your:
Google Business Profile, website, social pages, digital advertisements and other online listings.
You can also send the link directly when someone asks how they can contact your shop.
The fewer steps you give a customer, the better.
3. Put a WhatsApp QR Code Inside Your Shop
Your existing customers are often the easiest people to connect with.
Imagine a customer is standing at your billing counter.
They have already visited your shop.
They already know you.
This is a good time to invite them to stay connected.
WhatsApp Business lets businesses share a QR code that customers can scan to start a chat.
Put it near your billing counter with a simple message such as:
Scan to Connect With Us on WhatsApp
You could also tell customers what they will get by connecting:
Ask About Products • Get Shop Updates • Check New Arrivals
Don't just put a QR code on a counter without explaining why someone should scan it.
4. Give People a Reason to Message You
This is where many shops make a mistake.
They write:
“WhatsApp Us.”
Why?
What should I WhatsApp you about?
Make the call-to-action specific.
A footwear shop in Pune could say:
“Looking for your size? WhatsApp us to check availability.”
A clothing shop in Jaipur could say:
“Want to know if this design is available? Ask us on WhatsApp.”
An electronics store in Bengaluru could use:
“Ask price and availability on WhatsApp.”
Now the customer knows exactly why they should click.
5. Showcase Products With WhatsApp Catalog
If customers contact you to ask about products, create a WhatsApp Business Catalog.
Your catalog can display products and useful information so you don't need to send the same photos again and again.
For example, a customer asks:
“Do you have men's shirts?”
Instead of searching your phone gallery and sending 15 images manually, you can direct the buyer towards your catalog.
This saves time for you and makes browsing easier for the buyer.
6. Reply Quickly
Getting a WhatsApp message is only half the job.
You also have to reply.
Imagine a customer sends:
“Is this shoe available in size 9?”
Your shop replies six hours later.
By then, that customer may already have purchased somewhere else.
WhatsApp Business provides tools such as greeting messages, away messages and quick replies that can help businesses manage customer communication. WhatsApp Business features
For common questions, prepare simple replies for things like:
price, store location, opening hours, availability and return policy.
You don't need to write the same answer 20 times every day.
7. Don't Turn Every WhatsApp Conversation Into Advertising
This matters a lot.
A customer messages:
“Is the blue shirt available?”
The shop gets their number.
Then the customer starts receiving sale messages every few days.
That can become annoying very quickly.
WhatsApp's business policies require businesses to respect user choices and applicable opt-in requirements for business messaging. WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy
Customers can also block or report businesses.
My view is simple:
A customer's phone number is not permission to spam them.
Send useful information to people who actually want it.
The Bigger Problem: How Does a New Customer Find Your WhatsApp?
This is where WhatsApp has a limitation for local discovery.
Imagine you run a home furnishing store in Lucknow.
There is someone living 1 km away looking for curtains.
Your shop has exactly what they need.
But that buyer has never heard about your shop.
They don't have your phone number.
They don't have your WhatsApp link.
They haven't scanned your QR code.
How will they start a WhatsApp conversation with you?
Before someone can message your business, they usually need some way to discover your business first.
That is a different problem.
And it's one of the reasons we built Vizbe around local shopping rather than only messaging.
Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.
The idea behind Vizbe is simple.
A customer shouldn't have to walk into ten different shops just to see what they sell.
Let them check local shopping options online first.
Then visit the physical shop and purchase offline.
That's our approach:
Check Online. Buy Offline.
Vizbe for Sellers App – For Local Shops & Businesses
The Vizbe for Sellers App gives local retailers a digital presence built around their physical store.
A shop can add products, create deals and cashback offers, connect with buyers and communicate with customers.
So instead of only asking:
“How do I get more WhatsApp messages?”
you can start asking:
“How do I get more buyers to discover my shop?”
That can create much more value.
Let Customers Check Your Products Online
Suppose someone wants sports shoes.
A nearby shop has them.
The buyer should be able to discover those products online before visiting.
With Vizbe, sellers can list products connected to their shop.
The buyer can check products and then decide to visit the physical store.
This is very different from trying to turn a local shop into another Amazon.
Amazon, Flipkart and similar marketplaces are largely built around completing the purchase online and delivering the order.
Vizbe is built around helping local shopping happen:
Online discovery → Offline purchase.
Use Deals to Turn Interest Into Shop Visits
Sometimes a customer needs a reason to visit today rather than next week.
That's where deals can help.
A local fashion store in Chandigarh could create a weekend deal.
A nearby shopper sees it.
The offer catches their attention.
They visit the physical store to avail it.
Your digital presence is now doing something useful — bringing people through your shop door.
Cashback Can Help Bring Existing Customers Back
Getting a customer once is only part of retail.
You want them to return.
Vizbe for Sellers lets shops create cashback offers that can give customers another reason to visit again.
This is why I prefer thinking beyond just WhatsApp enquiries.
An enquiry is good.
A sale is better.
A customer who keeps returning is even better.
Chat With Buyers on Vizbe
Vizbe also lets connected buyers and sellers communicate through chat.
A buyer looking at your product can have questions:
“Is medium available?”
“Do you have this in black?”
“Is your shop open today?”
They can contact the shop and then decide whether to visit.
So WhatsApp doesn't have to carry every business conversation.
You can keep local shopping conversations connected with the products, deals and shop that created the interest.
Send Bulk Messages to Connected Buyers
Once buyers are connected with your shop on Vizbe, sellers can also use bulk messaging for customer communication.
If your shop gets a new collection or starts an offer, you can communicate it to connected customers without manually messaging everyone one by one.
The goal isn't to send more messages.
It is to make business communication useful and connected with actual shopping.
Vizbe for Shopping App – For Buyers
The Vizbe for Shopping App is made for customers.
Buyers can use Vizbe to find local stores and explore products, deals and cashback offers.
Think about someone sitting at home in Hyderabad.
Instead of visiting several markets just to check what's available, they can start online.
Then they can visit the local shop they are interested in.
That is what we mean when we say:
Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.
WhatsApp Can Start Conversations. Vizbe Can Help Create Discovery.
I would absolutely keep WhatsApp Business available for customers who want to contact your shop.
Add a WhatsApp link.
Use a QR code.
Create a catalog.
Reply quickly.
Make it easy for customers to ask questions.
But don't build your whole digital strategy around waiting for someone to WhatsApp you.
Help people discover your shop, check your products, find your deals and connect with you.
Then use those digital connections to bring people into your physical store.
That's the future I see for local retail.
