What Is the Difference Between a Website and an Online Store?

What Is the Difference Between a Website and an Online Store?

A local shop owner once asked me:

“Abhinav, if I make a website for my shop, does that mean I have an online store?”

No. And this confusion is very common.

A website mainly gives people information about your business. An online store goes further and lets people choose products, place orders and normally pay online.

But there is also a third option for local retailers.

You can let customers check your shop and products online, but complete the purchase at your physical store.

That is the idea behind Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.

I am Abhinav Jain, Founder of Vizbe, a Noida-based platform being built for local shops and buyers. Let me explain the difference in very simple words.

What Is a Business Website?

Think of a website as your shop's online visiting card or showroom.

A local business website may contain:

  1. Shop name
  2. About the business
  3. Address and location
  4. Phone number
  5. Opening hours
  6. Photos
  7. Services
  8. Product information
  9. Contact form

For example, suppose you have a footwear shop in Jaipur.

Your website can tell people where your shop is, what type of shoes you sell and how to contact you.

The customer gets information.

But the customer may not be able to actually purchase the shoes through the website.

That's a normal business website.

What Is an Online Store?

An online store is built for completing transactions online.

It normally has:

Products → Prices → Shopping Cart → Checkout → Payment → Delivery

Think about large ecommerce marketplaces such as Amazon India or Flipkart.

The customer does not need to visit a physical shop.

They select a product online, order it and have it delivered.

A business can also build its own ecommerce website rather than selling through a marketplace.

So the simple difference is:

Website = Learn about the business online.

Online Store = Buy from the business online.

An Online Store Needs More Work

This is where many small shop owners need to think carefully.

Creating a simple website and operating an ecommerce store are not the same job.

With an online store, you may need to manage product inventory, online payments, orders, packing, shipping, cancellations and returns.

You also need customers.

Just because you create an online store doesn't mean buyers will automatically start visiting it.

That can be a lot for a small retailer whose main business is already running a physical shop.

Imagine a clothing store in Lucknow.

The owner may have hundreds of shirts, jeans and dresses. Customers already come to the shop and the staff already know how to serve them.

Does that business really want to start packing individual orders and shipping them across India?

Maybe.

But maybe not.

What If I Want My Products Online but Sales Offline?

Now we come to something between a normal website and a traditional online store.

Suppose you have an electronics shop in Bengaluru.

You want somebody nearby to search online and see that you have headphones, speakers, chargers and other products.

But you don't want to ship them.

You want the buyer to come to your shop.

The journey becomes:

Check Online → Discover Product → Find Shop → Visit Shop → Buy Offline

I think this model makes a lot of sense for many Indian local retailers.

Your shop already exists.

Your stock already exists.

You simply need to make both more visible to online buyers.

Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.

This is the gap we are trying to address with Vizbe.

Instead of telling every local retailer that they must build a complete ecommerce business, Vizbe takes a different approach.

Check Online. Buy Offline.

A local shop can put its business and products online.

Nearby buyers can discover those products online.

Then they can visit the physical shop and purchase directly.

The online presence supports the offline business instead of replacing it.

And digital access for small retailers is becoming increasingly relevant across India. ONDC, an initiative of India's DPIIT, also identifies limited online visibility and restricted market access among the barriers faced by small businesses. In March 2026, ONDC reported that more than 13,000 retailers had joined DigiDukaan across Hyderabad and Jaipur.

That tells us something important: local retail and digital technology are coming closer together.

Vizbe for Sellers App – For Local Shops & Businesses

The Vizbe for Sellers App is made for physical shops that want an easier online presence.

Instead of building a complete website from zero, the seller can use Vizbe to show the shop and its products.

You can add products that customers can check before coming to your store.

Got new stock?

Add it.

Running a deal?

Post it.

Want to offer cashback?

Create the offer.

Want to communicate with connected customers?

You can do that too.

The aim is simple: help your physical shop use online tools without forcing you to become a full ecommerce company.

Products – Let Buyers See What Is Inside Your Shop

One big problem with physical retail is that your products are hidden behind your shop door.

A person may live only 2 km away and still have no idea what you sell.

With Vizbe, shops can list products so buyers can check them online.

Think about a customer in Noida looking for a particular item.

If a nearby shop has listed it, the buyer can discover the product and then visit the shop.

That is much closer to how local shopping should work in the smartphone age.

Deals – Give People a Reason to Visit

Getting discovered is good.

Giving somebody a reason to visit is better.

A shop can use Vizbe to post deals and offers.

A fashion shop in Mumbai could promote a weekend sale. A gift shop in Pune could add a festival offer. A home store in Ahmedabad could promote newly arrived products.

The deal is seen online.

The purchase happens at the store.

Check Online. Buy Offline.

Cashback – Bring Existing Customers Back

Getting a new customer is only half the job.

You also want that customer to return.

Vizbe lets sellers create cashback offers for buyers.

A customer buys from your shop, earns cashback and now has another reason to remember your store.

For a local business, repeat customers can be far more useful than someone who buys once and disappears.

Vizbe for Shopping App – For Buyers

The Vizbe for Shopping App is the buyer side of this model.

Buyers can use Vizbe to discover nearby shops, products, deals and cashback offers.

That changes local shopping.

Instead of going from shop to shop asking:

“Do you have this product?”

the buyer can first check online.

Someone in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata or another Indian city can explore nearby options and decide which store they want to visit.

The phone becomes a window into local shops around them.

Website vs Online Store vs Vizbe

Here is the easiest way I explain it:

These are not necessarily competitors.

A business can have a website and use Vizbe.

A retailer can even sell online elsewhere and also use Vizbe to grow physical-store sales.

The right setup depends on what you want customers to do.

Does Your Local Shop Really Need an Online Store?

Ask yourself one question:

Where do I want the final sale to happen?

If you want the customer to order, pay and receive delivery online, you need an ecommerce setup.

If you mainly need information about your business online, a normal website may be enough.

But if you want nearby people to discover your shop, check products and offers online, and then come to your physical store, Vizbe is built around that journey.

India's digital-commerce ecosystem is also moving toward wider participation by local retailers. ONDC says one aim of its open-network model is to help local retail ecosystems access online demand regardless of business size, location or digital capability.

Local shops don't have to stop being local shops to become digital.

They can use online discovery to make their physical stores stronger.

That is exactly what I mean by:

Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.

If you own a local shop, start by putting your business, products and offers where buyers can discover them.
