Should I Post Reels or Regular Photos for My Shop?

If you run a local shop and use Instagram, you have probably asked yourself this:
Should I post Reels or regular photos of my products?
My answer is simple.
Use both, but use them for different jobs.
Reels are better when you want to reach more people and get attention. Regular photos are better when you want customers to clearly see your products, prices, colours and details.
But there is a bigger problem for local shop owners.
You can spend hours making Reels and taking beautiful photos, get thousands of views and still see very few people actually walk into your shop.
I am Abhinav Jain, one of the founders of Vizbe.com, and this is something I keep thinking about while working around local retail.
For a shopkeeper, views are nice.
Customers walking through the door are better.
Let's understand where Reels and photos fit into your local shop marketing.
Reels Are Better for Getting Attention
Instagram has put a lot of attention on Reels.
Meta even tested a Reels-first Instagram experience in India, where some users were taken directly to Reels when opening the app.
This tells us something about where Instagram is going.
Short videos are a big part of the platform.
For local shops, Reels can be useful because you can show several things quickly.
Suppose you run a clothing shop in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi.
You could make a Reel:
“5 new kurtis available at our shop this week.”
Show each one for a few seconds.
Or a footwear shop in Pune could make:
“New sports shoes starting from ₹999.”
A jewellery shop in Jaipur could show a new collection.
A bakery in Kochi could show fresh cakes being prepared.
Movement catches attention.
That is where Reels work well.
What Should a Local Shop Post in Reels?
Don't make Reels complicated.
You don't need expensive cameras or professional actors.
Use your phone.
Show real products from your shop.
Some simple ideas are:
- New products that arrived today
- 5 products under ₹500
- Before and after product demonstrations
- Weekend sale announcements
- New collections
- Products customers are buying most
- Quick tour of your shop
Keep the video clear.
Someone watching should quickly understand what you sell and why they should visit your shop.
Don't make every video just because a particular dance or song is trending.
You are running a shop, not trying to become a full-time influencer.
Regular Photos Still Matter
Don't stop posting photos just because Reels are popular.
A Reel gets attention.
A photo lets someone stop and look.
Imagine you run a saree shop in Varanasi.
You have a beautiful saree available in six colours.
A Reel can show all six quickly.
But clear photos can help the customer look closely at the design, colour and pattern.
This is why regular product posts still have value.
Good product photos can also make your Instagram profile look like a small catalogue of what your shop sells.
What Makes a Good Product Photo?
You don't need a professional studio.
Good natural light can do a lot.
Keep the background clean.
Make the product the main focus.
Don't cover half the photo with text.
If there are different colours, show them.
If the price is something you are comfortable displaying, mention it in the caption or image.
And please don't use a blurry photo just because you need to post something today.
One good product photo is better than five bad ones.
Reels vs Photos: Which Gets More Customers?
This is where things become less simple.
A Reel may reach more people.
But more reach doesn't automatically mean more shop visits.
Suppose your Reel gets 20,000 views.
Sounds great.
But if your shop is in Indore and most viewers are from other cities, those people are unlikely to visit your store.
A photo might get only 500 views but reach people who already know your business and live nearby.
Those 500 views may sometimes be more useful.
For a physical retailer, the goal should not only be:
“How many views did I get?”
Ask:
“Did this bring people to my shop?”
That's the number I care about.
Social Media Has One Big Problem for Local Shops
People don't usually open social media because they have decided to shop at your store.
They might open Instagram to watch Reels.
See friends.
Follow celebrities.
Watch cricket clips.
Check memes.
Your product is competing with all of this.
And to keep getting attention, you have to keep creating content.
Reel today.
Story tomorrow.
Photo the next day.
Another Reel.
Another trend.
Another caption.
For a shop owner already handling customers, employees, stock, billing and suppliers, this can get tiring very quickly.
Going Viral Is Not a Retail Strategy
I sometimes see businesses become too focused on views.
A shopkeeper posts a Reel.
It gets 50,000 views.
Everyone gets excited.
But ask:
How many people came to the store?
Nobody knows.
I'd rather see a shop get 30 interested people from nearby than 50,000 random views from around the country.
Social media is good for attention.
But local retail needs something more.
It needs to connect online product discovery with an actual offline shop visit.
And that brings me to why we are building Vizbe.
Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.
Vizbe takes a different approach from social media.
On social media, you're creating content and hoping people discover it.
On Vizbe, you're building your shop's online shopping presence.
You add what customers actually want to see:
Your shop. Your products. Your deals. Your cashback offers.
The idea is simple.
People check online.
They find something they like.
They come to your physical shop.
They buy offline.
That's our whole thinking behind:
Vizbe – Check Online. Buy Offline.
Vizbe for Sellers App – For Local Shops & Business
The Vizbe for Sellers App is built for local retailers.
Instead of spending your whole day trying to make viral content, you can create your store on Vizbe and add products available in your shop.
Suppose you own an electronics shop in Bengaluru.
You have a new pair of headphones.
Add it.
New speaker?
Add it.
Running a weekend deal?
Add that too.
You're not creating content just to entertain someone.
You're showing buyers what they can actually come and buy from you.
That's a very different purpose.
Products – Let Customers Check Before Visiting
Think about how you shop yourself.
Before travelling somewhere, you often want to know:
“Will I get what I need there?”
Vizbe helps local stores answer that question online.
Customers can check products before coming to the shop.
For a local retailer, this can turn your physical stock into something buyers can discover digitally.
And you still make the sale inside your shop.
No need to become an online delivery company.
Deals – Give Buyers a Reason to Visit
You can also create deals through Vizbe.
Imagine a cosmetics shop in Hyderabad has:
Buy 2, Get 1 Free this weekend.
Instead of only posting the offer and hoping the right person sees it in a social feed, the deal can become part of your store's presence on Vizbe.
The purpose is not likes.
The purpose is store visits and sales.
Cashback – Give Customers a Reason to Return
Getting new customers is only half the job.
What about someone who bought from your shop yesterday?
Will they remember your store next month?
Vizbe gives sellers cashback tools that can help encourage repeat visits.
This is one area where I think many local retailers lose business.
They spend money and time finding new customers but do very little with the customers they already have.
Vizbe is built around both:
Get New Customers + Retain Existing Customers.
Chat and Bulk Messaging
Once buyers connect with your shop, communication doesn't have to stop after their purchase.
Vizbe supports chat between shops and buyers.
Sellers can also use bulk messaging to share relevant business updates with connected customers.
Got new stock?
Tell them.
Started a new deal?
Tell them.
Have something worth coming back for?
Let them know.
The goal is to build a customer connection that can continue after someone leaves your store.
Vizbe for Shopping App – For Buyers
The other side is the Vizbe for Shopping App.
It is made for shoppers.
A buyer can explore local stores, products, deals and cashback offers.
Think of someone in Chandigarh looking for shoes.
Why should their online search only end at a large online marketplace?
There may be a good footwear shop just two kilometres away.
Vizbe wants to help that buyer discover the local option online and then visit the store.
That's online discovery leading to offline shopping.
So, Reels or Photos?
My recommendation is:
Use Reels for reach.
Use photos for product details.
Use both when they help your business.
But don't build your entire local marketing plan around getting social media views.
Your shop doesn't survive on followers.
It survives on customers and sales.
Use Instagram to get attention.
Then build a proper local shopping presence where customers can check your products and offers.
That is exactly what we're trying to do with Vizbe.
Your customers are already becoming digital.
Your physical shop should become digital too — without stopping being a local shop.
